Every October, communities across the nation come together to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)—a time to honor survivors, raise awareness, and advocate for change. In Colorado, the need for this collective action is more urgent than ever.
💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Standing #WithSurvivors in ColoradoEvery October, communities across the nation come together to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)—a time to honor survivors, raise awareness, and advocate for change. In Colorado, the need for this collective action is more urgent than ever.
📊 The Reality in Colorado
Domestic violence affects Coloradans from all walks of life. According to the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS):
• 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in Colorado will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
• Abuse is not limited to physical violence—it includes emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse, often occurring simultaneously.
• Pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorders are at higher risk, as abusers may exploit vulnerabilities related to addiction.
These statistics are more than numbers—they represent our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members. Domestic violence is a public health crisis that demands our attention and action.
🛑 Why DVAM Matters
This year’s national theme—With Survivors, Always Con sobrevivientes. Siempre—emphasizes three pillars:
• Safety: Survivors deserve homes, workplaces, and communities free from violence.
• Support: Healing from trauma is a lifelong journey, and survivors need care at every stage.
• Solidarity: No one should face hardship alone. Community connection is vital.
