“Grab a shovel and start shoveling!” Those were the instructions directed to the Buddies from Kensie, the Mountain Valley Horse Rescue coordinator, on a cool October morning in at Mountain Valley Horse Rescue in McCoy, about 30 miles north of Wolcott. Junior and Senior buddies paired off and picked a stall to clean. The Buddy Mentors Service Day had officially begun.
The purpose of the day was to give back to the community, by volunteering to muck stalls and groom horses, however, the benefits extended far beyond the work done by the buddies. Buddies had a chance to bond with the horses (and with each other) while they learned about the amazing mission of the horse rescue. Buddies, many of whom were at the Rescue for the first time, stepped out of comfort zones and got up close and personal with the horses, while enjoying a day of fresh air and fun.
The Buddy Mentors service day at Mountain Valley Horse Rescue is always a highlight of the year, and this day proved to be no exception. Thank you, MVHR, for hosting us, and for the important work you do. See you next fall!
